Torn from her father, Willow is left to try and make it on her own at the young age of fourteen. Being an only child, and not having a mother to lean on, she isn't sure where to turn, or who to look to. When she is placed in a group home and meets Phoenix, her entire world changes. However, it doesn't necessarily change for the better.
Phoenix has his own burdens to deal with and isn't trying to deal with Willow or anything that she represents. His heart is cold, and he would rather be left alone, however, Willow does come to his defense, and saves him when he needs it the most.
A bond is formed between the two of them, and with that, they take on the world, determined not to be sucked down into the darkness of the poor and broken world that no one likes to talk about. Nothing is handed to them, and everything has to be taken. Quickly realizing that they have to adapt to their environment, they become people that they don't even recognize.
When Willow breaks down, and is no longer able to handle the pressure, Phoenix is forced to take a step back and reevaluate their lives. Is the life they are living worth the suffering that is being placed on them? Are the risks more than what they bargained for?
